Ordnance Survey National Grid paper maps for Scotland, 1944-1991
Information
This National Grid paper maps application is particularly useful for:
- Finding out what detailed maps were published by Ordnance Survey and when (from the 1940s to the 1990s) for any location in Scotland. Were there several editions over the years, providing a more detailed chronology for your location or just one or two? This information is particularly of value for site consultants, archaeologists, lawyers, and more generally for those interested in any Scottish location place and the detailed maps covering it over the past half-century.
- Showing the sheet boundaries of these published Ordnance Survey maps. Find out if your site of interest is on one or several maps.
- Identifying which areas were mapped by Ordnance Survey at their most detailed post-war scale of 1:1,250, which were mapped at 1:2,500 scale, or which were only at 1:10,000 scale (all areas not covered by red rectangles in this application).
- For 1:2,500 scale maps of urban areas, whether their individual North-West, North-East, South-West, and South-East quadrants were mapped at different dates.
- Finding out whether maps were created by an original survey, by revising a previous post-war survey, or revised from the pre-war County Series mapping.
- Listing the exact survey and publication dates for detailed paper sheet mapping for any place.
- Discovering how large a particular map of any place will be (for photocopying), based on its scale and format. See 'Copies' below.
How to search
The application shows the boundaries of the National Grid paper maps as red rectangles when zoomed in to display any area in detail. The basic procedure is to locate your area of interest by five main search methods (Zooming on the map, by Grid Reference, by a Gazetteer, by Postcode, or by Counties and Parishes), and then select your red rectangles by selecting a point or an area. Brief titles of selected rectangles or sheet map records appear on the left-hand side, and full information about these sheets can be found by selecting the sheet title.
Further advice on searching is given under the red Help link on the top right of the application.
More information about the specific sheet record information is listed as 'Notes' below every record in the application.
