| The Georeferencer application is a collaborative online project, where anyone with access to Internet can help with georeferencing of various historical maps from our collection. | Why georeference maps? | About georeferencer |
Please help the National Library of Scotland to georeference our scanned historical maps. Select a map you would like to georeference from the groups below: |
Further information
Georeferencer is easy and fun - all what you need to do is choose a map you would like to georeference, and then log into our online system (registration is an easy process, and free!). Details about the georeferencing process itself are described in the Step-by-step guide to georeferencing.
All maps georeferenced by you and other volunteers can be immediately viewed as an overlay in Google Earth and the Google Earth browser plug-in directly in your web browser. There are also several other good reasons why to georeference maps.
Right now you can:- compare historic maps directly with present day satellite images and dynamically change the transparency
- share, use and georeference the maps in more detail
- view the maps alongside other georeferenced historical maps of the same area
- help improve search methods to find maps in future (with an intuitive system such as the MapRank Search)
The Georeferencer application will improve over the coming months in line with the development of the wider Georeferencer project (read more about the project), and as other libraries add their online map images.
