- Georeferencer allows free collaborative online georeferencing of map images from a number of libraries. It shares several of the advantages of MapWarper and the NYPL Map Rectifier. However, unlike MapWarper, it does not rely upon images being uploaded to a website, but rather it makes use of zoomable images on existing library web servers.
- At present, the functionality is relatively limited, but there are plans in place to extend this quite soon. For example, soon it will be possible to allow cropping of maps to sheet boundaries, to allow for polynomial as well as affine transformations, to overlay georeferenced maps on a Google map, and the ability to view the results in MapAnalyst. Some of these can be viewed now at: www.georeferencer.org
- Libraries and the public will benefit from the stored geographical metadata about the georeferenced map. The metadata can be used for populating the MARC21 034 field, the Dublin Core Bounding Box, and related geo-enabled search methods such as MapRank Search Engine.
- The shared administration of Georeferencer across libraries, allows for sharing of costs of development and maintenance, and improvements in functionality are available for all libraries as soon as they are developed.
- At present, single-sheet maps work best in Georeferencer. For multi-sheet maps, or for maps in a series, we hope that tools including the automatic cropping of map sheets at their neat line edges, and georeferencing and mosaicking using sheet index boundaries will allow their easier online presentation.
- Georeferencer has been developed by Klokan Petr Pridal and the Moravian Library Brno as part of the OldMapsOnline.org Project.
