Main objectives

1. To create a set of geo-referenced historical maps of Edinburgh in the 19^th century accessible for student learning purposes.
2. To reach a broader public through the NLS website and cultural institutions of Edinburgh, and to encourage local organisations and history networks (Historical Association, Local History societies) to bring the mapping tools to the notice of their members.
3. To develop routines, using open source software, to allow the historical source material to be interrogated, layered, visualized, and analysed.
4. To develop new graphical and statistical outputs (including dynamic maps, views, graphs, diagrams, reports) relating to the social and economic history of Edinburgh, and to further the understanding of 19^th and 20^th century cities more generally through new representations of its historical geography, cartography, and social and cultural history.
